With his trademark entrance - clad in black cape and striding purposefully onto the stage - Ted “The Count” Hankey is one of the most recognised faces on the world darts circuit. Throwing bats into a typically boisterous darts audience, to the backdrop of DJ Zany’s ‘Be on your way’, Ted cuts an imposing and charismatic figure. Once on the oche his achievements in the game are no less impressive.Winmau sponsored Ted is a two-time Lakeside World Champion. The first arrived in 2000 after he whitewashed Ronnie Baxter 6-0 in the final, winning the match with a spectacular 170 checkout – the highest three-dart finish achievable. With the final lasting only 46 minutes, it was and remains the quickest and most one-sided final in the tournament’s illustrious history.
Ted’s second tournament win came in 2009 against Tony O’Shea. He had to work a little harder that time and after beating two other former World Champions in John Walton and Martin Adams en-route to the final, he prevailed in a 7-6 game dubbed a classic.
In between, Ted has won a number of prestigious open tournaments at home and on the continent. He has done so utilising one of the most natural and fluid throws in the world darts. Darts legend Bobby George was once quoted as saying: ‘Ted I love to watch you play darts’ following a game at the Lakeside. Here at Winmau we can only echo those sentiments.
