Anderson Claims First World Matchplay Title
Gary Anderson was crowned BetVictor World Matchplay champion last night after a marathon 21-19 tie-break victory over Mensur Suljovic.
This was the Flying Scotsman’s first ever title at the Winter Gardens in what was a high quality final. Both men averaged over 100 and hit 14 maximums a piece.
Suljovic lead 9-7 in what was a tight opening to the match-up, Anderson then managed to rattle in four consecutive legs and lead 11-9 before moving to the brink of victory at 17-13 up. Suljovic rallied himself to take a huge 5 legs on the bounce to bring the fixture back to 18-17 in the Austrian’s favour.
The match then went into a tie-break situation as Anderson took 2 legs on the spin and would have closed the match if it was not for a tragic bounce-out on the bullseye for a 121 finish. Suljovic cleaned up 46 to keep the game alive only for Anderson to take the contest 21-19.
