- Daryl Gurney and Simon Whitlock to compete as part of the world’s darting elite -

2018 sees the biggest shake up in the 14-year history of Premier League Darts as six of the sport’s biggest names from last year’s tournament make way for a host of new players including two from Team Winmau.

Sixteen-time world champion Phil Taylor will be missing from the oche following his retirement, as will Adrian Lewis, Dave Chisnall, Kim Huybrechts, Jelle Klaasen and James Wade, who won the event in 2009 and reached the finals in 2010.

Amongst the galaxy of darting stars replacing them will be Winmau’s world-ranked number six, Daryl ‘Super Chin’ Gurney who makes his Premier League debut after a dynamite 2017.  Also returning to the tournament is Winmau’s resurgent Simon ‘The Wizard’ Whitlock. Whitlock first played in the Premier League in 2010 where he made the semi-finals, the Australian has showed tremendous desire and resolve to return previous form and reclaim his Premier League spot.

Launched in 2005, the Premier League provides one of the toughest tests in the sport. The 2018 tournament will be played over 16 weeks at venues in the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands and, for the first time, Germany. Over the first nine weeks each player will compete against his nine opponents twice to earn points. The bottom two players will then be eliminated, leaving the remaining eight to play each other once more until the top four emerge to compete in two semi-finals and the final at the O2 Arena in London on May 17.

“I’m delighted Daryl and Simon have been invited to compete in this year’s Premier League,” says Winmau’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Flack. “Their participation is just recognition for two of the world’s elite players. Daryl has earned his spot by charging up the rankings during 2017 and winning his first major, The World Grand Prix. Simon’s invitation is recognition of his longevity as one of the best players in the world and a recent resurgence in his form.”

The Premier Darts League begins on February 1 at The 3Arena in Dublin and culminates at the O2 Arena in London on May 17. Other players taking part are newly crowned PDC World Champion, Rob Cross, Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price, Gary Anderson, Mensur Suljovic, Raymond van Barneveld, Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith.
